So this year we wanted to try more Soragoi, Chagoi, and Ochiba
Shirgure... paired Sora up with Shugar and Megan. Why Megan (koromo)?
Well we thought he might add an interesting mix to the spawn, took
a gamble you might say.
- A note a bout Megan... he is approximately 12 years old. Megan
was previously owned by Ian's parents (you might recognise him from
other photo's on this site) and didn't know he was a HE when they
named him! When they both retired they chose to shut down their
indoor Koi pond. We helped them rehome several of their koi and
chose to keep Megan for sentimental reasons.
The fry pictured below are barely 2 weeks old. They are growing
well in one of our ponds - 18ft x 12ft x 4.5ft. Largest at this
point are approximately 1 inch, smallest about 1/4 inch, the rest
are somewhere in between.

Here
is the crew we used to test the conditions for spawning.
They are Yamabuki Ogon Longfin (Butterfly Koi) and one Platinum
Ogon Longfin. We put these together June 3rd, they are out
of our sales tank (meaning not personally our fish pets)...
the female was quite gravid and looking uncomfortable -
we didn't want them spawning in the sales tank so we figured
'what the heck',.. let's do a test spawning.
Just
to recap a little, two weeks before this we did try to spawn
Sora and also a Yamabuki female (Marigold) but no luck,
nothing happened then so even at the end of May the conditions
for spawning here were not good. This is why we chose to
put this breeding into motion, to check if they would spawn....
heck the tree frogs were going nuts in our ponds so we thought
the fish might too!
